Final

Semi-Final

The last decision I was left with, deciding between the font (Gotham HTF) in light or book. I decided on slightly thicker as after all this is a poster and needs impact and visibility.

Light

Note

This is not my rationale
I feel this assignment was a rewarding experience. Although now I can't walk past a single poster/advertisement in the street without starring it up and down and deciphering every element. It has made me realize the importance of every tiny detail in design and how you must consider all possibilities and what feeling you want the viewer to gain from your design

Three Final Elements

My three final elements

the latest be included- the blood drop
the Unilever U take off
Bunny body/insides

Development

All developmental images are being displayed in my physical workbook but here are a few images that show the way I have progressed with my design.

Not in any particular order

Deciding what I did and did not need in my design
and what just needed to be refined

Week 6: Session 2

The last class! and the last chance to receive feedback before hand-in. I spent most of this lesson getting other students opinions which I felt were super helpful! and giving others feedback on their work too. After trying to make big last minute changes I decided that I am happy with my final design now and the changes weren't necessary. I think its about trying a lot of ideas but knowing when to stop too! Im confident that I will finish my final tonight and have it printed tomorrow.

Week 6: Session 1

Today I came into class with what I thought was almost a definite final, but after talking to tutors and class mates I realized there was still quite a bit of tweaking to do. Main changes were in font, text layout  and size. I feel just altering these elements made my design look complete. I will carry on playing around until I am certain its right. Feeling more confident with my design idea than last week.

Week 5: Session 2- Interim 2

I came back to class today ready to take on suggestions and criticism in order to move forward in a faster pace. I had some suggestions relating to the fact I could include the element of stores/product so the overall idea is clearer and isn't strictly an anti animal-testing poster.

- Put bunny design on bottle/s (shampoo, soap etc)

- Show a shelf layout, like you would see in a supermarket having the products lined up.
On the products would be my bunny, or perhaps just the unilever logo I created.

I feel I have ideas just unsure of how present them in the most effective way possible.
Thinking and playing around with it more on illustrator is the plan now.

Week 5: Session 1- Interim 2

Background of these images are just plain white.. not sure why it appears grey.
These are two designs I brought into class for 2nd interim, obviously still in the early early stages of development. Many people liked my initial idea that I have and think it is unique. I highly doubt I will be keeping this text but it is just a way of getting used to text layout and seeing how it interacts with the images I created.

I used illustrator to create each item. The items include things such as make-up products, laboratory equipment, bones/animal remains. I hope to add more and make it overall a lot more refined.

Overall people preferred the bunny concept, mainly for its emotive pull. You can see the victim.
A change from my original mock-up in 1st interim is the bunnies form. The bunny is now sitting/laying down on all fours instead of standing up.. this shows it as a bunny that is more vulnerable, scared and damaged.

Mock-up

Here is a rough mock-up on one of my preferred designs for interim 1. If I chose this design a lot would have to be altered. I would most likely create the blue objects on illustrator, whilst combing a scan of my sketch for the face. I would have a proper font decided and pay change the text yet.

Not quite sure if the message I want to send is clear enough.. perhaps not similar enough to unilevers logo for people to make a connection?

Slogans/ Text

Some of these are existing, some I came up with or slightly altered

- "Unilever meeting the everyday needs of people everywhere"

"Meeting everyday needs"

- "Shop smarter New Zealand" (Countdown supermarkets)

- "You're paying for this"

- "Real beauty" or "Inner Beauty" (Dove)

- "Boycott"

- "20% off all cosmetics instore" (could have 20% of animal missing)

- "Nearly 100% die" (SAFE statistic)

- "P&G's brands make everyday just a little bit better"

"Billions of consumers all over the world"

-  "88% of New Zealanders want to ban testing cosmetics on animals"

"12% where's your head at?" (basement jaxx reference)

Note Taking

Here are some thoughts that popped into mind while working on my design thumbnails

-Australia is bringing out organic/vegan/anti-testing cosmetic products ahead of New Zealand.

-Big corporations like to cut corners, animal testing is cheaper and more convenient.

-Labour party member Trevor Mallard is trying to put a ban on all animal testing and products tested on animals being sold here in New Zealand. (he was successful with banning testing of synthetic drugs)

-Inspirational songs:
Moby- Disco Lies
Basement Jaxx- Where's your head at

-When in Europe I noticed there are a lot more family run stores selling organic products, obviously not animal tested. Would businesses like that not survive in New Zealand?

-Dove is produced by Unilever, and is advertised a lot in New Zealand.
The Dove symbol is a symbol of peace and beauty, I think that's a tad hypocritical.
Slogan: "Natural Beauty"

-The bunny rabbit is one of the most well known animal to be tested on, they are cute fluffy innocent animals that are commonly pets. So seeing a bunny in this situation should be emotive for majority of people.

I feel if I can Justify digging deeper into corporations such as Unilever and P&G and their use of animal testing to produce products we are purchasing in superstores in NZ, instead of focusing on the common idea of big vs little businesses then it should be ok to go a bit off topic.

Examples/ Artist Models

Louise Chen- Spring Bunny: similar to what I would like to do, using objects to make up silhouette of a rabbit

Unknown artist: Clever with the idea of women using these cosmetics combined with the test subject themselves. Parody in a sense, but deeply disturbing also.

Kozyndan: After Lee suggested this artist to me I did some research and love their work. The use of the bunnies and the way they are incorporated into the surroundings is clever and beautiful.

Kat Blouch- Test Bunny: I like the use of layering/ collage. Also making the needles into a pattern is very effective. I won't be using photography feel this is inspiration anyway.

Week 4: Session 2- Interim 1

I found today very productive and helpful. Talking to fellow students and getting their opinions and advice on my chosen ideas gave me some much needed clarity. I am almost certain on what design I have chosen for my final, but feel it needs quite a bit of tweaking before 2nd interim. Something I am struggling with is coming up with the text for my poster. There are many good slogans I have found that could be used, its just deciding which makes the most sense and has the greatest impact. Also unsure on whether I am allowed to use existing slogans from companies. My topic is very emotive and needs to hit people hard.

Week 4: Session 1- Interim 1

Unfortunately I fell ill with a tummy bug during the previous week and didn't feel I could make it to class. I emailed Lee to let him know I would be absent. I will come to tomorrows class with my four mock up designs to gather advice from tutors and fellow students.

I found this video posted by artist Banksy on his facebook page.
I feel it relates to todays reality of factories and corporations taking over organic alternatives.
